Behavioural Medicine is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the development and integration of behavioural, psychosocial, and biomedical science knowledge and techniques relevant to the understanding of health and illness, and the application of this knowledge and these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
We provide teaching and training in clinical health psychology and behavioural medicine to undergraduate and postgraduate health science students including clinical psychology interns.
Our discipline also offers masters and doctoral programmes in Behavioural Medicine. A key area of focus for the Department is research. There are several ongoing projects in collaboration with other institutions both nationally and internationally.
The Department also oversees the training of clinical psychology interns in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal and the provision of clinical psychology services. Behavioural Medicine staff are primarily placed at the following hospitals in Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
